There is no better way to put cycling kit to the test than at a tough gravel sportive. The Glorious Gravel Dorset Epic Long Route - 95 km with 1,322 m elevation - was the perfect proving ground for my new GRVL kit.

From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was buzzing. Glorious Gravel is well known for organising some of the best gravel rides in the UK, and this one was no exception. But I was just as focused on how my new kit would hold up over a long, demanding day on mixed terrain.

Tyres, terrain, and the challenge ahead

The rider briefing email had warned us about the technical sections and the importance of tyre choice. On the day, that advice was clear to see - riders turned up on everything from skinny road tyres to full-on mountain bikes. Once out on course, it became obvious that tyre width and pressure would make a huge difference to performance and comfort.

Hydration made simple

One of the highlights was the excellent performance of my GRVL Hydration Pack. Being able to sip water or electrolytes without fumbling for bottles kept me focused on the trail and stopped me from taking in half a mouthful of mud. On long rides like this, hydration efficiency is a real edge.

All-day comfort

Equally impressive were my GRVL bib shorts and merino wool jersey. From the chilly start to the warmer mid-day climbing, the merino jersey adapted perfectly, keeping me warm without overheating. The shorts delivered consistent comfort right to the end, with no adjustment or irritation - a big tick for any endurance gravel rider.

Event experience

Credit where it’s due, Glorious Gravel knows how to put on an event. The signage was excellent, feed stops were well thought out, and the route itself was stunning - the Dorset countryside at its best with challenging off-road climbs and flowing trails. However, what stood out most was the community atmosphere. Everyone was there to enjoy the ride, rather than chase times.

Verdict

The Dorset Epic proved the ideal test for my new GRVL kit. Durable, comfortable, and practical, it did everything I needed on a tough ride. Combined with a brilliantly run event, it made for a memorable day out and left me excited to see where my GRVL kit will take me next.
