James Walsgrove
Name: James Walsgrove
Age: 46
Location: Norwich, Norfolk
Notable Achievements:- I’ve completed many iconic road events, including the Mallorca 312 seven times, LEJOG twice, and all three ascents of Mont Ventoux in a single day. Although I’m relatively new to gravel, I jumped straight in and finished the Stone Circle in my first year - and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Why GRVL?
For me, GRVL represents exactly what gravel cycling is all about: functional, comfortable kit that doesn’t make you feel like you’re dressed head-to-toe as a road racer. The designs are simple, stylish, and versatile; you can spend a full day in the saddle and still feel comfortable walking into the pub afterwards. I love that the apparel is built to last and designed with sustainability in mind - something I feel is so important in today’s world, where there’s already too much waste. GRVL makes clothing that does the job, does it brilliantly, and looks good doing it.

What Got You into Gravel Cycling?
Honestly, the poor state of UK roads and the lack of respect from drivers pushed me to look for something different. What I found in gravel was a community of riders I’d call “normal” people, not obsessed with FTP numbers or chasing Strava segments. Gravel is less about competition and more about adventure, connection, and enjoyment. The rides are social, the scenery is stunning, the pace feels more inclusive, and best of all - no cars. Gravel gives me the freedom to switch off, ride casually, and really appreciate cycling in its purest form.
Gravel Goals for the Future?
I’d love to take on more multi-day challenges and bikepacking adventures. Across Catalunya is high on my list - if I’m brave enough to take the plunge!
Favourite Place to Ride Gravel?
We have limited amounts in Norfolk; however, I loved my recent trip to Kielder Forest with the GRVL team and also the "champagne gravel" of the Salisbury Plain.
Favourite Ride Snack?
Turkish Delight - a simple, tasty alternative to the usual branded energy chews.
Favourite Piece of GRVL Apparel?
The 3-Season Jacket. It’s the perfect all rounder, truly versatile across different conditions, with proper cycling pockets on the back. I love that it works just as well off the bike as on it - stylish, practical, and classic GRVL.
